Mt. Liberty
Tuesday, August 17th, 2010 by gwenFriday after work we drove to the White Mountains with a bunch of our friends for a weekend of camping and hiking (and biking for Nick). My friends were kind enough to accompany me on my next 4,000 footer – Mount Liberty in Franconia Notch. We woke up on Saturday, made a quick oats breakfast and headed straight over to the mountain. At 4,459 ft and rated strenuous, I knew this hike was not going to be easy. I didnt not know that I was totally going to bonk like half way up and feel like I couldn’t move my body up the mountain. It was crazy, but I made it to the top, eventually.
Puerto Rico pt 2: Vieques + Old San Juan
Thursday, May 13th, 2010 by gwenWednesday morning we drove from our hotel in Luquillo to Fajardo and caught the 9:30 am passenger ferry to Vieques – a small island off the east coast of Puerto Rico. About an hour and a half later we landed on Vieques to lots of sunshine, crystal blue water and white sandy beaches. We grabbed a public car (taxi) to Esperanza on the other side of the island, and checked into our hotel. Not having any plans for the afternoon, we got into our swim suits and wandered down to the city for some lunch.
Esperanza seems kinda touristy to me. The city is basically comprised of a row of pretty cheesy restaurants/bars across from a malecon (“boardwalk”, but basically just an elevated sidewalk along the ocean). After lunch we walked down to the public swimming beach, which was so pretty.
Puerto Rico: Luquillo + El Yunque
Sunday, May 9th, 2010 by gwenWe spent last week in Puerto Rico on an impromptu vacation, booked two weeks prior. Puerto Rico is definitely my favorite spot I’ve visited in the Caribbean, but very different from Costa Rica (although it boasts some of the same natural features). I really enjoyed the trip – beautiful scenery, crazy bay (more details in the next post), local culture, clear water and wearing short shorts and my fedorable hat everywhere.
We arrived in San Juan on Monday around 3pm, grabbed our rental car and took the scenic route along the coast to Luquillo – a little beach town close to the rain forest. We checked into Luquillo Sunrise Inn, milled around a bit, checked out the beach across the street:
Holidays

This year we decided to visit our families down in Florida for the holidays. Lucky for us, we left just before the first big snow storm of the year in Boston, and missed the blustry weather altogether. The 60 degree weather in Florida may have seemed cold to the locals, but we loved being able to leave the house without spending 10 minutes wrapping up every inch of exposed skin in jackets, scarves, mittens, hats, wool socks, fleece lined tights…Yeah, it was good.
