AEA Boston

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010 by gwen

I went to my first web development conference ever on Monday and Tuesday in downtown Boston. I was pretty surprised when one of the speakers surveyed the audience, and I found out that most people were in from out of town. I met designers and developers from Philly, Boulder, NYC, Portsmouth and the Netherlands – and a few locals scattered in there too. Day 1 of the conference sort of underwhelmed me – it was a lot of generic, broad information – like don’t take clients who seem like they’ll be a PITA. Day 2 really got into some good stuff, mostly CSS3 awesomeness with loads of code up on the giant screens. That is what I was looking for. I grabbed a few snapshots from the AEA Boston Flickr group, can you spot me in the two below? Read the rest of this entry »

Girls will be girls

Seeing as “No Boys Allowed” was such a hit last month, I decided to take advantage of Nick’s absence again with part II. This time around my friend Leeanne brought over Dream Phone (which I loved playing with my best friend in elementary school), and I supplied the other essentials like jello shots, cosoms, snacks, pink hair mascara – oh, and Darci brought over an original 1980s hair crimper. All told, it was amazing.

It was gorgeous on Sunday, after an early brunch with Nick at Friendly Toast in Kendall, I headed over to the plant store to find some flowers for our backyard. I had no luck with that, as I’m looking for something particular (peonies). However, I did run into my new gardener buddy Danielle. We were both headed over to our plots, so I offered to help her tote over some tomato cages and seedlings.

My favorite

sprangsSister turns 30 today, and I wish nothing more than to be spending the entire day goofing off with her. I think there are a lot of people out there who don’t realize how amazing the people in their lives are* – especially when it comes to family. My sister is definitely not one of those people, and neither am I. We all get to choose who we surround ourselves with, and I choose to hold my family closest to my heart.

Although I can only account for the past 20 or so years of my sister’s life first hand (I don’t remember much before the age of 5), I have so many fantastic memories of growing up together. I remember so many days with her playing dolls in the attic, hide and seek everywhere in the house and the neighborhood, mud-ball fights in the backyard, catching tadpoles down at the lake, sneaking out of bed late at night to tell ghost stories in the living room. Even the childhood bickering was good, like when we decided to draw a line down the center of our bedroom to make two sides, yours and mine.

Woodies 2008

Friday, November 21st, 2008 by gwen

A lot of people at my job worked really hard pulling together this year’s Woodie’s awards. It’s funny because UF had mtvU playing all over campus, and for some reason I never noticed it until I started working for them. One of the perks of working here is getting VIP tickets to the big show:

Santogold from last Wednesday:

Lykke Li:

It was a great show – but I missed a great performance by Vampire Weekend, to head to the after party early. Oops!

Election day!

I did vote this morning. My first time actually voting in person, as I did an absentee ballot in 2004 (yeah, like they really counted that one…). It was fun and exciting and there was no line! I just ran in on my way to the subway this morning, everything was running smoothly.

I thought this was a really interesting mix of how people are feeling right now. The red words were submitted by McCain supporters, and the blue words were submitted by Obama supporters:

How are you feeling today?
