Southern Love
Sunday, November 25th, 2007 by gwenIt always feels a little strange going back to the South. There is always a hint of mildew and perfume in the air. However, I learned a few things while visiting with Nick’s grandmom in Athens for Thanksgiving – like why to never wag a dog’s tail, some new baby Nick memories, and how to make a delicious Date-Nut loaf. We have returned to Boston feeling fully full of food and love.
We arrived in Atlanta on Thanksgiving morning and hopped in our gold rental car and drove straight up to Athens where grandmom lives. She fed us the most delicious Southern Thanksgiving meal: baked sweet potatoes, collard greens with apples, eggplant and green tomato patties, country corn bread, fresh tomatoes and date-nut loaf for dessert. All of the veggies were fresh from grandmom’s garden, and everything was so delicious. We had both forgotten how much we love collard greens – I will be on the lookout for some fresh ones up here.
