First CSA Harvest

Friday, June 13th, 2008 by gwen

Today was our first pick up from our organic CSA – Red Fire Farm. We rode our bikes over to the MIT campus, where the farm sets up a stand with all the bounty. They just put up a chalk board each week telling you what’s available, and how much of each veggie to pick out. A small sampling of this week’s crop:

Pictured are: Hakurei turnips, radishes, chive blossoms, red and green leaf lettuce. We also picked up some spinach, arugula and a couple bunches of cilantro. As soon as we walked through the door, we wanted to eat the salad – so we promptly rinsed all the lettuce and arugula and made big salad which we ate at our picnic table out back. Tomorrow night’s menu: cold orzo salad with the spinach, chive blossoms, goat cheese and sun-dried tomatoes.

Now that the heat wave’s over it’s high 70s, sunny, amazing outside. My office moved last week to downtown Boston, and I’ve been enjoying riding my bike to work. It’s great to be back in the city again for work – I was getting a little sick of being so secluded here in Central – especially since the crazies are out in full force again.

I am trying to convince Nick go on a long weekend backpacking trip with me in a few weeks, and give up two wheels just for a couple days. I really miss being outside with no buildings, or cell phones, or blackberries, or keyboards around for miles. I’ve only been hiking in NH once so far, and it’s nice enough. But what I really want is to be back hiking in the Nantahala National Forest where we used to go – it’s so secluded, waterfalls everywhere, blackberries (the eating kind) along the trail, swimming in the cold rivers, not seeing another human for days, and incredible views, nothing but mountains.
