Lavatory makeover

We have been up to our ears in plumbing, assembling, patching, touch-up painting and all other things that seem to spring up when you decide to replace your lavatory vanity. Don’t worry, that terrible picture above is the “before” shot of our small bathroom, after we got curious and decided to see what was under the original mirror. As you can see above our vanity was fine, but cheap and two different shades of white, and the mirror was old and chipped. When we talked about replacing it, I didn’t know how much we would really get out of it, until we discovered that we could fit a dual sink along that wall.
Some things you learn during a bathroom project in a building from the 1870s (or probably a lot of buildings in general): Your bathroom floor is not necessarily level, someone could have shimmed your previous vanity and you won’t realize until you remove it. People change their minds. For instance, maybe they thought they wanted a medicine cabinet, even cut the hole out for it, but then decided against it, and just screwed the drywall back in place (this is the only explanation we could come up with for the cut out rectangle we found behind the original mirror). If you buy something from Ikea, plan on having to get creative to make it work with your existing plumbing setup, and plan on that creative process to take twice as long as you expected.

BUT, I think the results turned out fantastic! I love the modern new look, and the bright white makes everything look new and clean, always good things in a bathroom. I’m so excited to have my very own sink, tons of extra storage underneath (thank you genius Ikea designers) and a nice larger mirror. We also plan on replacing our off white toilet to match all the other bright white in the bathroom with a nice dual flush model. However, we have some other projects higher up in the queue right now (winter is definitely our season for indoor projects). We’ve also done some very minor updating in our kitchen, but I’ll save that for another day, when I can get some nice daylight shots of it.

WoW! That looks sooooo sleek and bIG! What a smart choice, lots of work later, and now I know what you’ve been up to! Wonder what Bella thinks of it! Great job Gwen & Nick!!! It is rewarding in being a homeowner, in that you get to *make it yours*! Love, Mom
