In the air
Today was a balmy 60 – I can’t wait until Spring really hits. Our neighborhood is so beautiful when all the trees come back to life. I’m creating a bit of artificial spring indoors with some tomato seedlings. This is my first time growing tomatoes from seed, and also my first time growing heirloom tomatoes. A couple months ago I ordered some Black Zebra seeds, and about a month ago I planted them in an egg carton…check them out now…
I was hoping to get a spot in a nearby community garden this year, but it looks like they have a pretty long wait list. Maybe next year. I guess I will be doing all container gardening again this year – I need more basil, mesculin mix, and some greens. I really wanted to grow pumpkins, but we definitely don’t have the room for that.
I will be growing everything I have room for organic, and we are going to sign up for this great looking organic CSA that drops off close to our apartment. I am so excited for the great local produce that is available at farmers’ markets in the summer. After reading an article on the benefits of organic farming, I am hooked. In the winter it is more difficult to find both local and organic options, but there is no excuse in the summer for not having both.
